Many things are special of my recent trip to Tallin, Estonia. It is a city that impresses simply by the contrasts you can find in it from the semi-destructed buildings that resisted the bombings and new made glass skyscrapers. It is not the place you would describe as safe, but still it is not considered a dangerous country if you put a bit of common sense. Poverty is not low, and everywhere in the world this makes people turn to the dark side in order to survive. This makes it easy also to find cheap hotels in Tallin, but sometimes the quality can be left a bit behind.
By the way, one of the most special things of this trip is that when we arrived at the airport we didn't even know where we were or what to do. It was the kind of most unplanned trip you can ever imagine, so after asking several people that spoke some basic level of English we managed to know where to point to. Only one word I managed to remember: Skane Hotel.
Skane is the name of one of those cheap hotels in Tallin, the hotel were we are supposed to spend the nights. After working hard during half an hour trying to understand the buses map (and locate where we were on it!) we manage to find a route that is taking us into a street called Skane, so it seems to be a good option, provided that we know that a bus station is just in front of the main entrance of the hotel.
You leave some high skyscrapers behind and in the next street you find yourself crossing some open spaces with very old houses, windows broken, water in the ground and some plants trying to win the battle to the asphalt. Also, You can see some strange faces in the street, probably as strange as their owner's way of walking... On the other side of the road you can locate the city center while you surround it. It was not bombed so everything is still standing.
Finally we see the name of our hotel on the right side and we go down of the bus. It is like a jewel in the middle of the mist. It looks good from outside, clean, walls painted properly. Don't rush! Take care, it is a road between you and the hotel, and this kind of dirty drivers will not stop unless you put your whole body in front of their cars. Just make them understand you are going to cross whatever it happens, or you will wait there until midnight.
Once you enter in the hotel, you feel back home. Possibly it can be one of the most cheap hotels in Tallin, but it is an absolutely cozy piece of work; the main desk staff is very helpful and friendly, everything clean and very well decorated and spacious. We get the keys and go upstairs to the first floor, and we find ourselves in front of a very big room with enormous windows that allow bright light inside. Everything smells cleanliness, specially the bathroom. It is some mirrors inside of the room, a general main light and two lamps, a TV, a wide double bed, an armchair and a desk. It is not luxury, but it is a lot more than you expect for the price of 35 dollars/night! Sure, I do know many tricks to get cheap hotels in Tallin from 15$ the night, but still this one was very good provided that I didn't use any of my tricks for the stay.
And to really make it close to perfection, it happened something else we were not expecting. It was the birthday of my girlfriend on the day when we were leaving. Just before paying for the service, the lady at the front desk gave her a birthday card written by herself and also a calendar as a present. A good one, by the way, with amazing pictures of Estonia on each of the pages. And I know she is still using it and remembers this story with a smile on her face.
I am sure you can get many cheap hotels in Tallin, but I can promise that if I ever have to return there, I know perfectly where I will spend my nights.
By the way, here you will find my trick to get 80% Discounted Hotels: Free Hotels
